USA west coast road trip – an ultimate travel plan shortcut

As the time passes by, August, the month of planning THAT trip is finally here. Most of you guys keep asking me about our previous USA west coast road trip. Except the itinerary of our whole 22 days (13 days on the west coast) trip you will find here some tips, what would we do differently now. This post is just a shortcut, which will give you an overview of our whole trip. See also the first part of The story behind our  road trip through the american west coast.

What we have booked in advance

Flight tickets:

Baltimore >>> Las Vegas (Spirit Airlines, approx $120 each)

Los Angeles >>> Toronto (American Airlines, approx $200 each)

Bus tickets:

Toronto >>> New York (Megabus, $25 each)

Accommodation booking:
Las Vegas – Stratosphere: $112/ room/2 nights

Accommodation airbnb :
Flagstaff – $40/room/1 night
Fredonia – $58/bungalow/1 night
Ripon – $49/room/1 night
San Rafael – $57/room/1 night
San Jose – $69/room/1 night
Malibu – $115/house/1 night
Los Angeles -$230/room/3 nights
Toronto – free(relatives) / 4 nights
New York – $140 /room /2 nights

The links for accommodations will be available in the next post together with my personal recommendations.

If possible, never buy a flight ticket nor a hotel accommodation during the weekend, especially not in Las Vegas. Also if you are flying with a lowcost airline, brace yourself for paying for anything extra including water or luggage. This is how they earn profit instead of the flight tickets itself.

Car rental

Chrysler (full size) – approx $350/10 days

We reserved a full size car at 3 different places (Hertz, Avis, Enterprise) just in case some of them will not accept our USAA membership. The biggest problem at this place is that for anyone younger than 25 (our case) the fees are incredibly high. The USAA membership helps you to cut at least some of the fees in your car rental. If you are reserving a car, be careful whether it already has insurance in the price. In America, it is not obligatory, and it is up to you, whether you want it or not. However, most of the time the insurance doubles the price of the car rental…but not, if you make your private one through Insuremyrentalcar 😉 (the insurance must be done one day before the insurance date starts!!!)

Tickets

Upper Antelope Canyon – $96/ 2 persons  (not necessary to buy in advance)

Things we would do differently:

  • Spend 2 whole days in Zion Canyon if possible
  • Sleep in a tent or car in Monument Valley
  • Sleep at camps (except some cities and some really cool places such as the bungalow in Fredonia or the house in Malibu)
  • Plan the viewpoints better
  • Not to buy the tickets for Antelope Canyon in advance
